If you are a non-english speaker and understand one of the languages for which Recoll is currently translated, you can be of a great help by translating the GUI messages.

The messages in the Recoll GUI are managed by the normal Qt internationalization mechanism. Each set of messages for a given non-english language is stored in a separate translation source file, e.g.: recoll_fr.ts, recoll_de.ts.

The .ts files can be created or updated by using the Qt linguist program, which is easy to use by anybody (no need to be a programmer). You can also use the very nice Web service instead. Please contact me to get an access to the Recoll messages on

Qt provides a separate download page for the Windows version of Qt linguist. On Linux, the tool usually comes in a separate package (either something like qttools, or even its own linguist package.

Here is the manual page for linguist. You may not need it as the tool is quite straightforward to use.

The source translation files are included in the source release, and they are also stored on the Web site for easy access. recoll_xx.ts is a blank Recoll source messages file, appropriate to work on a new translation. You can also list the directory to see all the translation files for updating one of them (the files are the same as those in the maintenance source branch on

If your language is not supported yet, or if the translation has some english messages left and you want to take a shot at fixing the problem, you can send the results to me and earn my gratefulness (and your less multilingual compatriot’s)…

If you wish to test the result of your work on the .ts file, you need to run the lrelease command to produce a .qm binary file. The .qm file should then be copied to /usr/[local/]share/recoll/translations before restarting Recoll.

If you wish to become involved in the development of Recoll, please send me an email.

The Recoll source repository is on framagit. Use git, to clone it and hack away.

Apart from possible tickets in the current or old tracking system, these are the general areas where help or ideas are particularly welcome:

  • A better GUI design (both the ergonomy and the appearance). Adding missing shortcuts or fixing the menu accelerators for exemple is easy and useful.

  • More support for the more advanced Xapian concepts like relevance feedback.

  • More filters for less common or less obviously useful file types.

  • Integration with the KDE desktop.

  • Integration with some mail user agent. We need a way to jump from a message preview to the message in thread context inside the MUA.

  • Etc. :)

Problem reporting

Once in a while it will happen that a Recoll program will crash (either the "recoll" graphical interface or the "recollindex" command line indexing command).

Reporting crashes is very useful. It can help others, and it can get your own problem to be solved.

You will find help and information about producing a useful problem report on this Howto page.
